Commerce Under Secretary Rebecca Blank's Statement on May 2009 Personal Income Data

"The Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis released data on personal income and outlays for May, showing that disposable personal income, adjusted for price changes, rose 1.6%, and personal consumption expenditures, adjusted for price changes, increased 0.2%. Consumers also increased their savings for May."

One-time Recovery Act spending, which increased government benefits, is responsible for much of the increase in real disposable income. While we cannot yet point to a sustained turnaround, the economy does appear to be declining less rapidly in the second quarter and private forecasters expect that it will begin to expand in the second half of the year.
