NANCY POTOK Deputy Under Secretary for Economic Affairs U.S. Department of Commerce Nancy Potok became Deputy Under Secretary for Economic Affairs on Monday, August 17, 2009. In this capacity, Dr. Potok provides key advice to the Under Secretary on all programs and policy issues, and has oversight responsibility for the policies and programs of the Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Economics and Statistics Administration (ESA) headquarters. Prior to joining ESA, Dr. Potok was the Chief Operating Officer at McManis and Monsalve Associates, a management consulting firm that helps organizations improve performance, manage change, and mitigate risk. She also was Senior Vice President and Director of the Economics, Population and Labor Studies Department for National Opinion Research Center (NORC), a non-profit social science research organization affiliated with the University of Chicago. Dr. Potok’s previous federal service includes work as Principal Associate Director and Chief Financial Officer at the U.S. Census Bureau, 1995-2002, where she was the Senior Executive directly in charge of Administration, IT, Field Operations, Policy Office, Strategic Planning, and EEO. While at Census, Dr. Potok was a member of the senior management team for Census 2000. She also has extensive government experience working as a Deputy Assistant Director of Finance and Budget for the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts and as a budget examiner for the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. She was a 1980 Presidential Management Fellow at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Dr. Potok holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from The George Washington University, M.A.S. in Administrative Science from the University of Alabama and a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Sonoma State University in California. She is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and a recipient of the Arthur S. Flemming Award.
