Manufacturer's Shipments, Inventories, and Orders

June new orders for manufactured goods decreased 0.8 percent to $440.7 billion. Shipments rose 0.2 percent to $444.3 billion. Unfilled orders increased 0.3 percent to $863.2 billion and inventories increased 0.2 percent to $594.4 billion.

 

Construction Put in Place

Construction spending in June 2011 was $772.3 billion, up 0.2 percent from May 2011 and down 4.7 percent from June 2010. April and May 2011 figures were revised upward.

New Residential Sales

Sales of new single-family houses in June 2011 were 312,000 at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, down 1.0 percent from the revised May level, but up 1.6 percent from a year ago.

Economic Indicator Preview: The Durable Recovery in Durable Goods

On Wednesday, July 27th, the U.S. Census Bureau will issue the advance report on durable goods for June.  This release is important because it impacts Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in two significant ways: exports of goods and business investment in equipment and software.  (The first look at GDP for the second quarter will be released on July 29th by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.) 

New Residential Construction

Building permits in June 2011 were 624,000, up 2.5% from May and up 6.7% from June 2010. Housing starts were 629,000, up 14.6% from the prior month, and up 16.7% from the prior year.
