Sales of new single-family houses were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 276,000 in July, 12.4% below the revised June rate and 32.4% below June 2009's level.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in July 2010 increased 0.3% from June's level, to $193.0 billion. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 3.8%. Capital goods shipments rose 1.4%, while overall shipments increased 2.2%. Inventories rose 0.6% in July.
Privately owned housing starts in July 2010 were 546,000, up 1.7% from June's level but down 7.0% from July 2009. Building permits were 565,000, down 3.1% from June and down 3.7% from July 2009.
Business inventories were up 0.3% in June 2010 from May and up 0.2% from their June 2009 level. Sales were down 0.6% in June 2010 from the prior month, but up 9.2% from the sales level one year ago.
Retail and food services sales in July 2010 were $362.7 billion, up 0.4% from June and up 5.5% from July 2009. Excluding automobiles, retail and food services sales were $299.7 billion, up 0.2% from the prior month and up 4.9% from the prior year.
