Sales of new single-family houses were 32.7% below the revised April 2010 rate and 18.3% below the rate in May 2009.

Building permits in May 2010 were 574,000, a decrease of 5.9% from April, but 4.4% above the May 2009 estimate. Housing starts declined 10.0% from the prior month, to 593,000. This was 7.8% above the May 2009 level.

Business inventories rose 0.4% in April 2010 from March, but were still 2.8% below their level in April 2009. Sales increased 0.6% in April 2010 from the prior month, and were 13.1% above their level a year ago.

Retail and food services sales in May 2010 decreased 1.2% to $362.5 billion from April. This was up 6.9% from the May 2009 level. Excluding autos, retail and food services sales in May 2010 fell 1.1% from the previous month, to $300.7 billion.

The U.S. international trade deficit in goods and services in April 2010 increased 0.6%, to $40.3 billion. Exports decreased 0.7% to $148.8 billion, and imports decreased 0.4% to $189.1 billion.
