U.S. Exports Top Historic High of $2.1 Trillion, Support 9.7 Million Jobs

9.7 million jobs supported by exports in 2011

This week marks the second anniversary of the President’s National Export Initiative (NEI).  The NEI aims to double U.S. exports by the end of 2014 which will in turn support millions of jobs.   The U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) has updated  their previous work on the relationship between U.S. exports and jobs and finds that in 2011, exports supported 1.2 million more jobs than in 2009 (see Figure 1). 

Over the same time period, U.S. exports of goods and services were up 34 percent, and topped 2.1 trillion for the first time in the nation’s history (see Figure 2).
