Blank Named Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow

Washington, DC (May 13) - Under Secretary Blank was inducted as an Eleanor Roosevelt Fellow by the American Academy of Political and Social Science. The event was held at the Newseum in Washington, DC. In appointing its first set of Fellows in 2000, the Academy sought to recognize and honor individual social scientists for their distinguished scholarship in the social sciences, sustained efforts to communicate that scholarship to audiences beyond their own discipline, and professional activities that promise to continue to promote the progress of the social sciences. Each Fellow is designated to a position named after a distinguished scholar and public servant. The AAPSS was founded in Philadelphia in 1889 to promote the progress of the social sciences. Report on Gross Domestic Product Statistics for
Four U.S. Territories Released
Washington (May 5)—The U.S. Department of Commerce released newly-developed Gross Domestic Product (GDP) statistics for American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The statistics are a product of a joint effort of the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Interior Department’s Office of Insular Affairs. Policy makers will now have an objective view of the size of these economies, their growth or contraction, and their major components in order to conduct economic-impact analysis on the effects of local and national policy decisions. New Commerce Department Reports Lay Foundation for Measuring Green Economy, Carbon Dioxide Emissions
Washington, DC - The U.S. Commerce Department’s Economics and Statistics Administration today released two new reports: one that defines and measures the size and scope of the green economy and another that looks at the ways in which the American economy's greenhouse gas emissions have changed over the past decade. Together, they provide valuable analytic tools needed to understand the emerging green economy, quantify greenhouse gas emissions and help inform future policy decisions. Commerce Issues Report on Role of Patent Reform in Supporting Innovation and Job Creation
Washington, DC (April 20) - Reforming America’s patent system will accelerate economic growth and job creation, and expand America’s ability to innovate, according to a new report released today by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The paper, titled “Patent Reform—Unleashing Innovation, Promoting Economic Growth and Producing High-Paying Jobs,” was authored by the Commerce Department’s Chief Economist Mark Doms, the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO’s) Chief Economist Stuart Graham and USPTO’s Administrator for External Affairs Arti Rai. Manufacturer's Shipments, Inventories, and Orders
New orders for manufacturing goods increased 0.1 percent in July to $409.5 billion. Shipments increased 1.1 percent in July to $409.5 billion. Shipments increased 1.1 percent to $417.1 billion. Unfilled orders declined 0.1 percent to $802.8 billion and inventories increased 1.0 percent to $526.0 billion.
NEW COMMERCE REPORT SHOWS GROWING EXPORTS KEY TO JOB CREATION
WASHINGTON – A U.S. Department of Commerce report released today confirms the importance of exports to the U.S. economy and the increasingly globalized marketplace. According to Exports Support American Jobs, in 2008, exports accounted for a record 12.7 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), and during a period of relatively flat job growth across the economy, supported a record number of jobs – more than 10 million.
Additionally, the report links our success in supporting American manufacturing with a successful export policy. The nearly 3.7 million manufacturing jobs supported by exports contributed to 27 percent of all employment in the manufacturing sector. (Report - PDF Version)
Working for Change Policy Forum Features Under Secretary Blank
Washington, DC (March 19) – Under Secretary Blank was a featured speaker and panelist at the “Working for Change” poverty policy forum on Capitol Hill. Blank said, “the new Supplemental Poverty Measure will provide an alternative lens to understand poverty and measure the effects of anti-poverty policies.” The forum presented information to congressional staffers and other organizations about how poverty is defined, and the new poverty measure that is being implemented in New York. The “Working for Change” policy forum is sponsored by the Community Service Society (CSS) which is a nonprofit organization that has been fighting poverty in New York for over 160 years. In recent years, their work has focused on using work and employment opportunities as a pathway out of poverty. CSS has conducted thirty “Working for Change” policy forums over the last three years.

Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Rebecca Blank Promotes Census in Schools in Hawaii
Kalihi, Hawaii (March 9)—Commerce Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Rebecca Blank urged Hawaiians to participate in the 2010 Census at a Census in Schools event at the Linapuni Elementary School on Tuesday. “As you know, Hawaii was an undercounted state in the 2000 Census, and we don’t want that to happen in 2010,” Blank said. “The complete count of our children nationwide is critical to their health, education and the future strength of our communities and labor force. That’s why it’s so important parents list their children on the 2010 Census form and mail it back.” (

Census Bureau to Develop Supplemental Poverty Measure New measurement will complement but not replace existing statistic
Washington, DC - The Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau is preparing to develop a Supplemental Poverty Measure that will use the best new data and methodologies to obtain an improved understanding of the economic well-being of American families and of how federal policies affect those living in poverty. Commerce Department Releases Report On Economic Impact Of 2010 Census
The report finds that 2010 Census operations may have an impact on economic indicators related to jobs and economic growth. Specifically, the report estimates that the hiring of temporary 2010 Census workers may increase the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) nonfarm payroll employment estimate by over one half-million in May. The report also finds that 2010 Census hiring may decrease the unemployment rate by several tenths of a percentage point. Finally, 2010 Census spending could boost second quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by approximately one quarter percentage point at an annual rate. (

Department of Commerce Issues Report for Vice President’s Middle Class Task Force
Washington, DC (Jan. 25)—The Commerce Department’s Economics and Statistics Administration issued a new report for Vice President Biden’s Middle Class Task Force: Middle Class in America. The report, which identifies what it means to be middle class in America today, uses a host of measures to show that it is more difficult today to both attain and maintain a middle-class lifestyle than it was two decades ago. “This report highlights the gravity of the economic realities facing American families aspiring to a middle-class lifestyle," Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said.
